Since the previous Bulletin 12 stories have been reviewed and there are currently 10 stories in review. Reviews couldn’t exist without authors and reviewers. So Thank You all for your work. BUT... more reviewers are needed!
First, a technical note: HASA has been unstable the last few days. Tech support has been unable to identify the root cause so far, but is continuing to investigate. Until the cause can be uncovered and corrected, the site will need manual restarts after it hangs. We apologize for the inconvenience.
On to reviews:
As I type this, there are 10 stories waiting for reviewers (remember to log in before you follow the link).
Member participation is crucial for reviews. The more people are involved in reviewing, the more opinions are represented. Just as importantly, having more people involved means that stories pass through review more quickly - which is good for everyone. If you are an active reviewer, why not go and check out a story?
Or, if you are a writer, take the plunge and submit a story for review (and when you do, remember: Put one in, take one out.
By submitting a story for review, you are asking nine other members to read and evaluate it. So why not do for the other authors who have a story in review what you'd like other reviewers to do for you: check out one of the stories already in review and give it a read.
Becoming a reviewer
If you're not an active reviewer, but think you can spare a bit of time... – even if you just review one or two stories in a month, every review is welcome. If you are logged in, you can sign up here if you've been a member of HASA for thirty days or more.
Daunted by the idea of reviewing? Don’t worry, reviewing at its simplest comes down to asking yourself: “Would I recommend this story to someone?” Then, whether the answer is 'yes' or 'no', you can make a choice from the capsule reasons to clarify your decision. If you want to, you can add a few more words to convey what you (dis)liked about the story, but just the capsule reason is perfectly fine as well.
Forum discussion
And for all (potential) reviewers, there is currently a forum thread about reviewing. Feel free to drop in and have your say if there’s anything you want to say or ask about being a reviewer.
And remember: even if you think you're too critical or not critical enough: your review is only one of nine, and all points of view are welcome. Not every reviewer has to review every story and in the end it does all level out to a balanced judgement.

The quickest way to get started with the Research Cabinet is to add a few items to it. It's as easy as finding an item to add and clicking a button!

At this point, you can leave the item loose in the Cabinet, add it to a Notebook, and/or create a Research Note to go with it.
How to add a Notebook to the Cabinet
Notebooks are like folders inside your Cabinet where you can put items to keep them organized. Unlike real life folders and notebooks, HASA Notebooks let you add your cabinet items to multiple notebooks. For example, you might be writing a story with Elladan as a main character and Aragorn as a minor character, and another story with Aragorn as the major character, but no Elladan. You can create a Notebook for your Elladan story and another for your Aragorn story, and put the Aragorn research items in both notebooks, including Research Notes!
You can add a new notebook from any Research Library item, from the main Research Cabinet page, from an existing Notebook and from any Research Note page.
How to Add a Research Note to the Cabinet
Research notes are your comments, ideas, thoughts, and notes that you want to have accessible to you no matter where you are. Anywhere you have internet access, you have your story notes, organized how you need them. You can link them to any or all of your Notebooks, toss them "loose" into the Cabinet, and link any Cabinet item to them. You can have notes on characters, on plot ideas, on timelines, you name it, as many as you need holding whatever makes sense to you.

...add an item to the Research Cabinet?
- Log in to HASA.
- Go to the Resources section of the site.
- Browse for a Research Library item you would like to add to your cabinet. The items you can add are:
a. Timeline Events
b. Character Bios
c. Places
d. Things
e. Full Text Searches (Note - you have to save a search before you can add it to your Cabinet) - Once you have found the Library item you want to add to you Research Cabinet, look for the right-hand menu box labeled "Research Cabinet".
- In the Research Cabinet box, click the "Add this [item] to research cabinet".
- The page refreshes and the item is added to your cabinet.
At this point, you can leave the item loose in the Cabinet, add it to a Notebook, and/or create a Research Note to go with it.

- Click the "Return to Browsing" button.

b. If you added the note from any other page, you will return to wherever you were when you clicked "Add Note". Your new note will be linked in the Research Notes list on that page.
You now can link any Cabinet item to the note or add the note to one or more Notebooks. Add more information to your Research Note as you do your research.

HASA news - Birthdays and stories

Is your birthday in July, and would you like a drabble about your favourite character or topic? You can request it here.
Not sure what the birthday cards are about? Have a look at stories written for previous requests.
One birthday in July is HASA’s own birthday on July 4th! Because a birthday wouldn’t be a birthday without a story request, we're asking authors to write a birthday story to entertain our readers. The theme is "giving" because that is what makes HASA run. People giving time, donations, ideas, stories, feedback - giving themselves.
Write about any aspect of giving that appeals to you, in any era of Middle-earth, with any characters. (Extra applause if you can work in the number 8.)
And of course a birthday wouldn’t be a birthday either without a present! So in proper Shire style, HASA has prepared a present for its members: head over to the Resources section and have a peek inside the shiny new cabinet (no, it does not lead to Narnia - at least, not unless you want it to...).
June Stories
All of us writers love feedback. It is the lembas and miruvor that sustains us as we write our story, and leaving a few words about a story you read is always a nice thing to do, whether the story is new or old.
Every fifteen minutes HASA highlights a story chosen at random from the Reviewed and General stories in the archive. Read the currently featured story on our front page.
Many talented writers are publishing every day. In June:

--- 53 General Stories were published or updated.
--- 3 Beta Stories were updated.

HASA How-tos - June 2010
The news today is full of articles about Internet dangers, but few of them tell you how you can defend yourself from these threats. HASA now has a Research Article outlining how to make your computer safe for browsing.
Facebook spam. iPad breaches. Conficker worm. Botnet zombies. Phishing emails. Trojan payloads.
No, these are not names of new grunge bands. These are the kinds of dangers the ordinary Internet user faces when trying to visit sites. On any given day, you'll find an article about one or more of these exploits in your daily newspaper. The online version, of course.
While there are plenty of attention-grabbing headlines, there are not so many resources to tell you how to avoid becoming a victim of these malware attacks. The information is out there, but presumes too much professional computer knowledge to put all the pieces together. Even some IT professionals aren't entirely sure what to do. When you do get your hands on the information, it's often in "geek speak" and can't clearly explain why you need to do this or that to your system.
Anglachel has waded through the references, analyzed the security articles, and figured out the basic steps HASA visitors should take to secure their systems. It has been pulled together into the research article Safe Browsing which is available to all visitors. While aimed at Windows users running either IE or Firefox, the general information is applicable to any operating system and web browser.

Our hosting costs are $150 US per month. HASA is an ad-free, fee-free Web site, run for the enjoyment of quality JRRT fanfiction. HASA Reviewed Stories May 2010
Since the previous Bulletin 6 new stories have been reviewed and there are currently 9 stories in review. Reviews couldn’t exist without authors submitting stories and reviewers reviewing them. So a big Thank You for the work to all of you!

As I type this, there are 9 stories waiting for reviewers, so please head over and review! (Remember to log in before you follow the link.)
Of course, member participation is crucial for reviews. The more people are involved in reviewing, the more opinions are represented. Just as importantly, having more people involved means that stories pass through review more quickly - which is good for everyone.
If you are an active reviewer, why not go and check out a story? Or, if you are a writer, take the plunge and submit a story for review!

HASA How-tos - May 2010
Keeping track of stories you read and really like is easy. Find out how to save them to your favorites and update the bookmark after you’ve read another chapter.
How do I...
...save a story to my favorites and update the bookmark?
Of course you can just bookmark a story in your browser, but there are also two ways to bookmark a story on HASA itself: Save to Favorites and AddThis.
AddThis is available to all readers, and lets you print a story, bookmark the page, email the URL, or link it to a service such as Facebook, Twitter etc.
On every story list and every Reader Toolbox, you will see a bright orange button with a plus sign on it. This is the AddThis button. How it works:
1. Hover your mouse over the button
2. A pop-up window appears with various options (print, bookmark, send to... etc.)
3. Click on the option you want
Save to Favorites is available when you are logged in, and saves the story to your Library on HASA. This means you can get your story list no matter what computer you are on because it is part of the site, not bookmarked on a particular computer. Your Favorites list is available on every page of the site in a drop-down list at the right hand end of the site header.
To save to favorites:
1. Go to the Stories section of HASA
2. Click on either the overview or any chapter of the story you want to add
3. In the Reader Toolbox that appears at the top and the foot of these pages, click the button that says "Add Story"
4. The page refreshes and the story is added to your list.
5. If you are on the Overview, the first chapter is bookmarked. If you are on a specific chapter, that chapter is bookmarked.
For multi-chapter stories that you have already Saved to Favorites, you can update your bookmark to set it to a new chapter by using the Set Bookmark button in the Toolbox in the chapter you are reading.
And that's all there is to it!

HASA How-tos - April 2010
Do you know about the Copy and Clone chapter commands on HASA? They are two cool tools to help you write your stories!
How do I...
...clone or copy a chapter?
Clone is only available in your Workshops. This allows any workshop member to make a clone of a chapter inside a workshop story and then perform edits or add comments while leaving the original chapter untouched. This is great for jointly written stories or for beta editing.
Copy is available in My Stories and in your Workshops. You can make a copy of your chapter and move it to another story, or just keep a copy of it in your current story. Use it as a fast way to move a work in progress chapter from an Off-List or Workshop story to a published story.
Use these tools to keep original chapters untouched while you do edits and try variations.
Cloning a chapter in a Workshop
- Be sure you are logged in.
- Go to the Workshop section and to your Workshop.
- Go to the story you want to clone chapters in.
- In the list of chapters, you see three options EditCloneDelete, and select Clone.
Alternately, go to the chapter and click Clone Chapter, right next to Copy Chapter. - The cloned chapter is now created, and you are taken to it.
- Remember to Return to Story Overview. The chapter number is still set at zero and to place it where you want in the list of chapters you must give it a number.
Now you and the other members of your Workshop can edit it like any other chapter.
Copying a chapter in My Stories or in a Workshop
- Again, be sure you are logged in.
- Find the story you want to copy from, either in your Workshop or through My Stories.
- Go to the chapter you want to copy.
- Click on the Copy Chapter button at the top of the chapter.
- You are taken to another page to select a story from the drop-down list and click to add this chapter to that story.
Then: once you have copied the chapter to the other story (for instance from a beta or workshop version of a story you are working on), you leave the current story and go to the other story's overview. This lets you put some finishing touches on the chapter, for example to make it ready for publication.
Remember to set a chapter number on your new chapter and set it to "Public" so it can be viewed!
And that's all there is to it!

Just as Challenges come from Prospective Challenges, Prospective Challenges come from Nuzgûl, and Nuzgûl need attention to grow from tiny ideas into all-dominating obsessive thoughts that keep you from your sleep and monopolise every waking minu^^^... erm... yes, well... Put on your mithril boots and step into the Nuzgûl hutch (the boots don’t actually protect your ankles, but they might be shiny enough to blind the Nuzgûl long enough to let you escape again...). Who knows what ideas you may come out with?

HASA Reviewed Stories March 2010
Welcome to the March reviews bulletin.
There are 6 reviewed stories since the February bulletin, and 5 stories are currently in review.
Reviews are an important part of the site: there are the authors who sit waiting with bated breath and fraying nerves, and there are our intrepid reviewers to think of. So before looking at the stories: Thank you all for your work, authors and reviewers alike!

As I type this, there are 5 stories waiting for reviewers (remember to log in before you follow the link).
Of course, member participation is crucial for reviews. The more people are involved in reviewing, the more opinions are represented. Just as importantly, having more people involved means that stories pass through review more quickly - which is good for everyone.
If you are an active reviewer, why not go and check out a story? Or, if you are a writer, take the plunge and submit a story for review!
Becoming a reviewer
If you're not an active reviewer, but think you can spare a bit of time... – even if you just review one or two stories in a month, every review is welcome. If you are logged in, you can sign up here if you've been a member of HASA for thirty days or more.
Put one in, take one out
By submitting a story for review, you are asking nine other members to read and evaluate it. So why not do for the other authors who have a story in review what you'd like other reviewers to do for you: check out one of the stories already in review and give it a read. How do I...
...set up a workshop?
While HASA has Beta status for works in progress, sometimes you need to show stories to a smaller set of readers before you unleash them on the general public. Or maybe you and a few others jointly write stories and need a place where you can all work at the same time. The Workshop is where you make this happen. It offers a private area where several members can work together on stories. This is in contrast to the My Stuff/My Stories area where you can only work on your own stories and no one else can get in there. It's also a way to avoid sending around email attachments and wondering if everyone can read the file format.
For answers to general questions, be sure to check out the Workshop FAQ.
Now you have to add some members to your shop, so you can work together.
OK, so you have a workshop, you have members and now you need a story (or
two or three)!
You're set! You can now work in the shop just like you work in your my Stories section of My Stuff, except that as many people as necessary can work there, not just you.

- Be sure you are logged in.
- Go to the Workshop section
- Look at the top of the right hand menu area for the button "Add a New Workshop".
- Click the button.
- When you see the form, enter a name for your shop. If you are working on a story, using the story name is a good idea. You can also use your own name or your writing group's name.
- Add a brief description in the text box. If you need some inspiration for names or descriptions, check out the Site owned workshops here.
- Click the "Add" button.
- The system creates your workshop and shows you the shop home page. By default, the shop is set to Private, meaning only you and invited members can see it.
Now you have to add some members to your shop, so you can work together.
- Go to the home page of the shop if you aren't already there.
- In the navigation column, locate the "Shop Info" section.
- In that section, click on the "Edit Members" button.
- You should now see the Manage Members page.
- Scroll down the page until your see a multi-select box. It will display all the names of all active HASA members in alphabetical order.
- Click on the name of the member you wish to add.
- To select more than one person, hold down the CTRL key while you click.
- When your list is complete, click "Add Members to Workshop".
OK, so you have a workshop, you have members and now you need a story (or
two or three)!
- Go to the home page of the shop if you aren't already there.
- Scroll down the main shop page until you can see the Stories section.
- Click the button "Add Stories to Workshop".
- On the Add Story page you have three options:
a. Add an existing story directly - pick a story from a drop-down list and click "Select". The story is linked into the shop.
b. Clone an existing story - pick a story from a drop-down list and click "Select". The system makes a copy of that story including all of its chapters and adds it to the shop.
c. Create a new story - Click the "Create New Story" button. You'll go to a standard story form. Fill it out and click "Add". This creates a new, empty story for you to work with.
You're set! You can now work in the shop just like you work in your my Stories section of My Stuff, except that as many people as necessary can work there, not just you.

HASA How-tos
HASA has always allowed authors to link stories to characters. Find out how to link your stories to Events, Places and Things, too!
How do I...
...link a story to an item in the Research Library?
You've written a story for the Treasures Hunt Challenge, and have entered it in the Challenge, and now you want to link it to the treasures you used, or you have another story that you want to link to a Research Library item.
Make sure you are logged in.
Go to Resources, and find the Character, Event, Place or Thing you want to link your story to.
In the righthand column you will see a heading 'Linked Stories' with two options underneath: "View Stories linked to this Character/Event/Place/Thing" and "Link my story to this Character/Event/Place/Thing".
You click on "Link my story to this Character/Event/Place/Thing". Now you are on a page with a pull-down list of your stories.
Select the story you want to link to the Research Library item, and click on Link Story.
Your story is now linked to the Research Library item you picked.
If you made a mistake and linked the wrong story, you can now easily remove the link again: on this same page, you have a list of all your stories that are linked to any particular research topic. Just click on "Remove Link" and the story is no longer linked to the Research topic.
Stories can be linked to more than one research topic, and you can link more than one story to any one research topic too.
So take a look at the February Treasures Hunt, and be inspired by this month's items...
You don't need to be entered in a Treasure Hunt challenge to link your stories. You can link any of your stories to Research Library entries whenever you like. Do you have something that takes place in Dol Amroth or Rivendell? Link to those places! Is your story set during the Fall of Gondolin? There's an Event entry for that awaiting your link. Do you discuss Wargs? Link to their entry!
Link away, and above all, have fun writing!

HASA news - February 2010 - week 1
From this month on we’ll be going back to more or less weekly news items. This week we look back to the stories written and updated in January.
And don’t forget to enter your story for the first ‘Treasures’ Challenge, which closes February 7th!
January Stories
All of us writers love feedback. It is the lembas and miruvor that sustains us as we write our story, and leaving a few words about a story you read is always a nice thing to do, whether the story is new or old.
Every fifteen minutes HASA highlights a story chosen at random from the Reviewed and General stories in the archive. Read the currently featured story on our front page.
Many talented writers are publishing every day. In January:
--- 27 Reviewed Stories were published or updated.
--- 55 General Stories were published or updated.
--- 1 Beta Story was published.
(Please note, you need to be logged in to view beta stories.)

HASA is an ad-free, fee-free Web site, run for the enjoyment of quality JRRT fanfiction. Our Secret Admirer will match every dollar donated, even small donations quickly add up. For February, we need $45, or nine $5 donations.

Something Different
Ang says "Let's help Haiti". She'll take care of the rest of site hosting for this month, and encourages HASA visitors to give to the charity/relief organization of their choice. Below is a list of links to sites where donations can be made. Some links go to pages the aggregate other links, while some go directly to organizations. There is also a link to a site where you can verify the reputation of these organizations. Thank you!
Interaction.org - page of relief organizations. Many different organizations, some religious, some secular, with a lot of options. All are reputable.
Los Angeles Times page of organizations
Clinton Foundation Haiti page - has a list of organizations accepting donations. Bill is the UN special envoy for Haiti.
Global Giving - has some local Haitian organizations for those who don't want to give to the big anonymous organizations.
Doctors Without Borders - is reputable and already working in Haiti.
Partners in Health - same as DWB. Has been in Haiti 20 years.
ShelterBox - this organization packs and delivers boxes filled with essential relief gear.
Charity Navigator - site for checking out the reputability of an organization. Not just the Haitian relief effort.
Cash is needed most of all to purchase immediate supplies: food, water, portable shelter, medical supplies.

Challenges in January
Check out challenges!
You have through today to write up a birthday present story for one of our December birthday babies. Even if you just have an idea and not a full story ready, you can enter it as a placeholder. If you need a reminder on who had a birthday in December, go to the Event Calendar in About and do a search for December 2009 birthdays. There are currently 35 birthday girls and boys. NOTE: You have to be a logged in to search for other member's birthdays.
We have several people asking for presents, and several stories have already been written. Check out the January 2010 discussion thread for the latest news. There are 35 member birthdays in the calendar, so plenty of members who would love a little recognition of their special day.
HASA has a new kind of challenge - the treasure hunt. All HASA pages now have a little treasure tucked away on them. The treasures are obscure entires in the Research Library, and different treasures appear in different areas of the web site. The challenge is to take the Challenges treasure for a story focus and then use one or more of the other treasures to write a story. See the challenge itself for more detailed instructions.
Who is going to come up with the most interesting combination of treasures?

HASA news - January 2010
Of course the news of this month for HASA is the launch of the newly made-over site last month. If you haven’t done any exploring yet, jump in!
Also, congratulations to all authors who won or placed in the MEFAs, and applause to the many people volunteering their time to make the awards a success.
Birthday Cards
If it’s your birthday in January, and you would like a drabble about your favourite character or topic? You can request it here.
At the moment there are two requests:
Imhiriel (Jan. 3) would like drabbles focusing on diplomacy (between allies or enemies, successful or not, any age, race, place) and Princess of Gondor (Jan. 11) would like something (romantic!) focusing on Aragorn and Arwen.

Reviews
You’ll find a list of stories in review at the top of the members home page. If you are an active reviewer, log in to see the 5 new stories that are waiting for reviewers.
Or, if you are not yet a reviewer, why not sign up to become one? Reviewing is not nearly as daunting as it may seem, and you're eligible if you've been a member of HASA for thirty days or more.
Member participation is crucial for reviews. The more people are involved in the review process, the more opinions will be represented. Just as importantly, having more people involved means that stories pass through review more quickly - which is good for everyone.
By submitting a story for review, you are asking nine other members to read and evaluate it. So why not do unto other authors in reviews as you'd like other reviewers to do unto you: check out one of the stories already in review and give it a read. Put more simply: put one in, take one out
Challenges and Nuzgûl
In honor of the new site, here is a new challenge!
1. Locate the Treasure link hidden on the Challenges home page. That is your story focus.
2. Select a Treasure from any other publicly viewable section of the web site. The public sections besides Challenges are: HASA Home, Stories, Playlists, Forums, Resources, and About.
3. Write a story of any type or length using those two treasures. Drabbles, poetry, vignettes, short stories, longer than that - all are welcome.
4. Link to the two treasures in the story.
5. If you can make use of more than one treasure in crafting your tale, go for it! Just be sure to link.
The challenge runs through January and will close on Sunday, February 7, 2010.

All of us writers love feedback. It is the lembas and miruvor that sustains us as we write our story, and leaving a few words about a story you read is always a nice thing to do, whether the story is new or old.
Every fifteen minutes HASA highlights a story chosen at random from the Reviewed and General stories in the archive. Read the currently featured story on our front page.
Many talented writers are publishing every day. In December:
--- 16 Reviewed Stories were published or updated.
--- 38 General Stories were published or updated.
--- 4 Beta Stories were published or updated.

Play with Playlists!
Playlists have been a part of HASA for a few years, and with the new design are easier to use than ever before.
What is a playlist?
Playlists are lists of HASA stories put together by authors andreaders, just as music lovers put together lists of their favorite songs.
Examples:
- Stories in a series put in reading order.
- A collection of similarly themed stories, such as Hobbit romance or critical essays on Men.
- A reader's "favorites" list, complete with explanations of why the reader likes them so much.
- A collection of stories by multiple authors.
What is in a Playlist?
There are two parts to a playlist:
- The list itself. This is a name and a short description of what the list is presenting.
- List items. These are links to stories that have been added to the list, plus a short description of why that story has been added. It can be as long or as short as you want.
Once stories have been added and given a description, you can set an order to them, just like ordering chapters in a story.
Why would I want to create a playlist?
Lots of reasons!
- You are an author and want to promote your stories. A playlist helps with this:
- Updated playlists appear on the home page of HASA.
- Playlists can put your stories in chronological reading order, which makes it easier for readers to follow along.
- Playlists let you write extra commentary about your stories in the overview and individual story descriptions.
- You are a reader who follows an author or likes a particular genre of stories.
- A playlist can put together a set of her works in the order you like reading them.
- It's an easy URL to send to friends to get them hooked on this author, too.
- You can collect a set of stories together that you might not be able to create a saved search for, such as dramas by these four authors that always have Faramir and Aragorn in them.
- You are a reader with a huge number of favorite stories on HASA.
- A playlist helps you organize that large list into more manageable chunks.
- Stories you like but aren't actively reading can be safely stored for easy retrieval.
- You can use the playlist overview and story overview areas to go into detail about why you recommend this story to other readers.
- You are part of a workshop.
- If you are authors jointly writing stories, you can create a multi-author story list complete with commentary on how they are combined.
- You are authors who don't write joint stories, but have similar themes and want to combine your works.
- You have a set of challenge stories to put into a playlist.
- You want to build a set of research articles or critical essays.
- Some reason we haven't thought of yet.
Playlists are handy ways to put big sets of stories together, including commentary on why they are in the list, for very little effort.

HASA is back online
HASA is back online a little earlier than expected: http://www.henneth-annun.net
- If you are using an older browser (IE6, Firefox 2.x, Opera earlier than 9.8, etc.) you need to upgrade for the best view of the site. HASA is usable, but not very nice under older browsers.
- The site has been reorganized. Please take time to study the new navigation menus and choices and see if you can locate the page you're looking for if you don't see it right away.
- You will have to log in again to the new site. Passwords saved by your browser probably will not work.
- A great deal of database work has been performed in the last 48 hours. Some settings have been reset to default values and you may need to restore your customizations.
- Check your profile. Everyone has been upgraded to full member (no more Readers/Authors) and all members now have an author record. Members can now list state/province and city if desired, and they can add URLS to multiple websites they own.
- If you have stories, take a look at them. Very old stories may have lost their paragraph and line breaks.
- If you have Challenge entries, make sure they are all still there. Challenges are now all public, all the time, and some old settings may keep your entries from showing.
- My Library not only shows bookmarked stories, bookmarked authors, and all alerts, you can now save searches and manage comments you make to authors.
- Alerts & Favorites under My Stuff will now show you who has you and your stories saved as favorites, as well as showing alerts and comments. You can manage subscribers to your alerts, too.
- Readers now have a Readers Toolbox on story pages to help manage bookmarks, playlists, alerts, recommendations and so forth.
- Authors have more story management tools.
